Deciding on a Niche

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about what type of business I want to start and what I mean by that is what niche I want to get into. Obviously I want to start an online business but the niche is what field of interest your site and products are going to be about. For example, the health and fitness niche or the making money niche.

In the past what I’ve done is do my keyword research, find out what people were searching for and buying, and try to get into that niche. That’s what everyone said to do, right? Go where people are spending the money and try to fill a need. Few of the gurus would tell you different. Luckily I found one that did and I’m going with his advice. Find something you love and follow that passion and the money will come later. I never tried this route because, honestly, I needed to make money. I just didn’t believe that I could make money in the things that interested me. I figured they were for fun or hobbies but not to make a real living.

I chased the numbers in the past meaning the keyword searches, available products, traffic, etc. The only numbers that weren’t looking good were the ones behind the dollar sign. 🙁 I finally figured out one of the reasons why. The niches I got into were good niches but I was really only in them to make some money. So when it came time to keep creating content or really trying to help people out, the topics just didn’t hold my interest enough to continue in that market. It became really easy to slack off because it was just another job and this one wasn’t bringing in any money so the motivation just flew out the window.

So now I’ve flipped the process. I picked a couple of markets or niches that I’ve always enjoyed and been passionate about. So I decided to get into the painting/art instruction niche and the self development or self help niche. I’ve been into art since I was a kid but never really pursued it as a career because I had to get a “real job” as they say. So once I chose the niche then I did my keyword research and looked to see if there were other products to sell. I knew there was because I have bought tons of them!!! I found a domain name and bought it up and am working out a plan to make this into a real business. I haven’t researched the other niche as of yet but that’ll be coming soon.

So besides this site, I’m going to start working on my art site which is under the name “easy painting lessons” or easypaintinglessons.com. That site will take a bit longer to develop simply because for what I want that business to be there will be more technical stuff involved and I am definitely not a techie so I’ll need some help there. It’s such a difference than before. With these two sites so far I have a million ideas flowing through my head. I just need to plan them out and execute but I can tell you motivation won’t be an issue :).
